The third gender option “X” is now available in the naturalization application

Effective April 1, 2024, a third gender option, “X,” defined as “Other Gender Identity,” was added to Form N-400 “Application for Naturalization” in the gender selection section in addition to male and female.

If you filed Form N-400 before April 1, 2024, and received a Request for Evidence (RFE) or Notice about interview, respond to the RFE or Notice about interview by sending a letter explaining that you are asking to change your gender to “X.”

If you have an online USCIS account, upload a letter requesting to change your gender to “X”. Upload it as new evidence for your pending application.

If you do not have a USCIS online account, please send an email to updategenderinfo@uscis.dhs.gov and ask to change your gender to “X”.

If you already have a certificate of naturalization but need to replace it, remember that Form N-565 (Application for Replacement of Certificate of Naturalization/Citizenship), does not yet allow you to select gender “X”, you can still select gender male or female in this form.

Form N-400 is currently the only one USCIS form that offers an “X” gender option.

You do not need to provide supporting documentation to initially select “X” as your gender or to ask USCIS to change your gender selection on Form N-400. The gender you select does not have to match the gender listed on your other immigration documents or supporting identification documents, such as a birth certificate, passport, or government ID.

Please note that the new Form N-400, effective April 1, 2024, includes a section about obtaining a Social Security card. But if you choose the “X” gender option, you may need to visit a Social Security Administration office because they have not yet implemented systems to accept the “X” gender option.
